How do I bring up an overdue review to my boss? – Chilla Frilla – iPhone 3GS Unboxing and Review (HD) 720p
Here is the Question: How do I bring up an overdue review to my boss?
I’ve been working at this place for almost five months now, and have never been approched regarding my three month review. I’ve been waiting this far because I didn’t want to seem impatient or greedy, but by now, it’s definiatly been more than 90 days.
I’m having mixed feeling about mentioning the review because my hours have been cut down by about a third since I’ve started school again. But my responsibilities have increased.. I work at a small company, so we’re all really tight, and I’m nervous that if I request my review, it’ll soon get around to everyone.
I know it sounds adolescent, but I just don’t know what to do. I make more than enough money as it is, should I just forget about it?
I’m not questioning weither or not to bring up the review, it’s HOW to bring it up without making the situation awkward. This review was mentioned to me when the first offers for employment were being made.
Also, it’s not just a review with my manager or supervisor, it’s with the BOSS boss. He’s the VP of the company.

My recommendation is to weigh the risk of NOT completing the review. My company is rather large and therefore might be totally different – only you know your specific circumstances. That said, a few things to consider:
* Is it required as part of a probationary period? If so, you would want a record of satisfactory completion of your probation period.
* Do you have documented feedback from your manager? One of the purposes of a review is to remove the ambiguity – if you need to improve in certain areas, this is your manager’s chance to point them out to you. If you do NOT get feedback, you risk continuing to go down the path your are heading, which MAY be the path to failure. You really don’t know unless your manager TELLS you how you’re doing, what is working well, and where you need to change things.
* Did your manager really forget? No news is good news some times – other times it is really just a way to avoid an issue. You need to KNOW and have dialogue with your manager on your performance. It is your RIGHT as an employee to receive candid periodic feedback – I would recommend at minimum every quarter, ideally once per month.
I would suggest you understand the “why” of the 90 day review (your company’s policy) and then approach your manager with that (a formality) and the desire to know how you are doing with formal feedback. I don’t know of any manager that wouldn’t be willing to complete this. After all, it’s part of a managers job!
Don’t do anything, you have a job and are doing it and obviously the boss is happy. He/she did let you cut yours back and unless you were told when you were hired that you would have a ninety day review, you probably won’t have one due to the smallish company. I never gave my employees a ninety day review guarantee when I hired them. Heck, if they were still employed after ninety days, they could consider it to be for life.
