Service Magic Reviews
Service Magic, Inc. is an online company that is operates out of Golden, Colorado. The company operates through its site and offers many solutions for home improvement, repair and remodeling connecting homeowners with thousands of contractors.
Service Magic has a great database for the customers to find home improvement contractor according to the needs and wishes of the customer. Service Magic employs a group of designers that create different home improvement project that can be seen on video and photos.
Service Magic can also help with landscaping, lawn care and sprinklers, cleaning, electrical and plumbing services. Please try to contact Service Magic Customer Service directly prior to posting any complaints on this site.

I am a contractor that used ServiceMagic for over a year. To make a long story short they are a complete rip off. Their exclusive leads they give to at least 3 others. It is impossible to get credits. A majority of the leads are deadbeats just surfing the net.
Stay clear and DON’T give them a credit card.
Beware of ServiceMagic Contractors! I used ServiceMagic to find a mold remediation specialist. I got a call almost instantly after submitting the inquiry. I hired the guy. His work and his attitude were abysmal. I paid in full for a job done so poorly it’s pathetic. I complained to ServiceMagic and they replied with an email that apologized and suggested I submit a review of the company. Interestingly, the ServiceMagic contractor can print his own rebuttal to a review. He can lie and say it was the customer’s fault. He can even go back later to make his rebuttal even more full of lies if he wants. Meanwhile the customer who has been cheated out of a lot of money and is left with an unsatisfactory job can’t do anything. I will never use a ServiceMagic contractor again and recommend that if you have a job that needs to be done, check your local phone book or do a google search and if you find that one of the companies is a contractor with ServiceMagic DON’T CALL!
Went on line after a hail storm – did a search using Service Magic and how many contractors did it return – 2 KB Contracting and Sear’s. Sear’s made an appt and then day before to be here to give an estimare called to say they needed to send someone differently since I did not have insurance settlement check in hand – not interested – I asked for an estimate. KB Contracting called PERSISTANTLY – guy even showed up at my house univited and unwanted – when I explained I had already given the job to someone else he proceeded to tell me he wished I had let him know since he had to pay $56 dollars for the lead – that’s not my problem. THe company had no “presence” on the internet and it sounds as though service magic does nothing to vet these contractors – only interested in passing along “leads” to earn dollars. Storm Chasers are the contractors who use this service – I will never use this site again – the fact that Service magic passed my personal info to such disgracful contractors and businesses makes me cringe. Strong arm sales tactics by contractors thinking just becuase I inquire about an estimate the job is “yours” – this is crappy business model and serivce magic is a joke – am I honestly to believe only 2 contractors were found for my job or was it that only 2 contractors were willing to pay Service Magic for a lead – therefore leaving me wide open to high pressure sales tactics users of this service employ – DON’T USE SERVICE MAGIC FOR ANY QUOTES AND DON’T DO BUSINESS WITH ANY CONTRACTOR WHO USES THIS SERVICE -SERVICE MAGIC NEEDS TO BE PUT OUT OF BUSINESS
Servicemagic is a complete and total scam! After calling to cancel my account with them they kept charging my credit card. To date they have taken more than $2,000 from me. Out of the 40 or so leads they provided me with 4 people picked up the phone, 2 of which said I had the wrong number. I am currently disputing all charges with my CC company! I wouldn’t recommend this service to my worst enemy! BUYER BE WARE.
So far leads are not quality. It maybe a legitimate business but with the poor quality of these leads they are too expensive.
You Contractors need to wake up and smell the Roses. Stop your crying and realize that any business in this economy is good, If you spend 22 dollars on a breaker pannel lead and get 10 that’s 220 dollars and if you even land 1 out of 10 i make 1,000 dollars on a pannel upgrade. thats 780 dollars after paying for my leads to feed my family on that note your contractors who FAIL at a chance to make money. Maybe its because your business SUCKS….. Just saying….
This company is not one I would recommend for those seeking work. The leads are expensive, the sales people are low-rent morons (yes you can tell that over the phone), and more often than not the inquiries from consumers are worthless. Ask around, anyone will tell you the same.
Okay………, I have been reading comments about Service Magic and will admit to say that I signed up in August of this year. I spent at least a total of 4 hours in 3 days talking to a salesman in CO. . I asked him question after question and he did answer every question plus assured and reassured that my first 100 leads were free. I signed up for 70.00 instead of the normal 200.00 fee……., plus 14.00 ? for their simple web page. This goofball told me that I could build off of 1 zip code and so I started with the zip code I live in. And yes I did get a job ( under handyman ) and NO, I was not charged a lead fee. HOWEVER, THE NEXT SEVERAL LEADS……, I WAS CHARGED FOR (12.00). I e-mailed them and explained the situation assuming it would be straightened out but THEY NEVER ANSWERED MY E-MAIL. I know…… I am only talking 72.00 BUT it is the principle. So….. I was doing the math but decided it was not worth my time. But if here in Arizona there were 1000 handymen / women and we were all charged for 10 leads when they should have been free for the first 100 and we said to ourselves…… self…. SCREW THIS SERVICE MAGIC and close the card account they draw out of, and just walk away, they still made money off of us and don’t give a flying @!#% . So….. if you read this and don’t believe me….. just keep on reading these complaints until you say to YOURSELF…. Service Magic IS NOT FOR ME. hanbun5102@yahoo.com
I’ve used SM and after paying them $560 for leads I got a big 0 jobs from them.
I and other contractors are getting together to hire an attorney to sue them for our hard earned money and SOME.
To shut them down for scamming contractors and clients.
Contact Better Business Bureau (BBB) in your state and tell them, SM is a HUGE SCAM.

Service Magic is not Better Business Accredited!
Check out the BBB website look for Lakewood, CO 80401-3259
They have an A+ ratings but I suspect that changes soon- the delaying tactics they employ is about to catch up with them. For all those people that complain here I understand what a hassle it is to file with the BBB they follow up and request proof to substantiate the claims, but if you have a valid complaint it’s almost an obligation you have for protecting fellow consumers.
PS: I just spoke to “Josh” and now after 13 months he says my negative review will be posted, two chances of that “slim and none”.
The best way to deal with the likes of serviceMagic and I suspect Angie’s List … contact the BBB for their ratings short of that contact only local contractors that are not on either one of those services, I’d also ask for proof of insurance and license information, since they are so dishonest with ratings I see no reason to just assume they check insurance and licensing.
Scam?
It just may be but I’d try to find a more elegant way of saying “Scam” I really don’t feel scam fully describes them, since they employ tactics like dishonesty, obfuscation (concealment of intended meaning in communication) basically any and all forms of not posting negative comments “Scam” seems to be too indirect, “Not to be Trusted”, is less likely to be skipped over thinking that it’s too severe, when in fact that’s what they are in doing what they do. I really think “Not Trustworthy” is more of an indictment of their practices.
At this point after trying for 13 months to post a negative review, and now on the verge of it seeing the light of day- I fully expect that it won’t be once they put 2 and 2 together.
Maybe Angie’s List is better though I really doubt it, this business model is too easy to copy.
PS: If they fully had intentions of rating their “pros” a disclosure of the BBB ratings would be the way to go, but obviously that is not their concern so yeah Scam may be a good fit.
It might work for customers but NOT for contractors!!! I’m a contractors and I pay a lot of leads that I have no chance to bid on it. Reasons??? customers are not serious… dont return your phone calls, dont answer your e-mails, change their minds in seconds and decide not doind the project, sometimes they say that they already have someone to do the job even when you reach them right away after receiving the lead, etc.
Dont reccomend servicemagic for contractors at ALL!!!
Total scam.
I asked for some help with gutters, and they sent some names. Called a couple , and made an appt for an estimate. Guy was over an hour late, but did leave a decent quote. Looked up “Service Magic” reviews and this guy was 5 star . I thought …ok, maybe just having a bad day (mistake #1). I accepted the bid and set an appt, and took the day off work to meet him.
Guess who never showed…even after I got confirmation in writing. I called him and he said “I make a mistake”. Great excuse!
A call to complain to Service Magic and they could care less. I can’t leave a comment as they only allow REVIEWs for finished work… and they’re presumably reviewed and cleansed before posting. When I complained they did not ask which contractor it was, but wanted only to send me more names to contact for bids. When I asked to make a complaint against this contractor their answer was “We had no Service Magicc pros in the area so we just sent you names of other contractors”.
ANOTHER great answer!
Totally scam outfit at least from the consumer side.
BEWARE!
Hi All – I am a consumer, not contractor. I am really surprised at all the negative comments about SM. I’ve used them for years both in Florida and Georgia, nothing but good results. I didn’t realize contractors paid by the lead, but every time I use SM it is for serious work so everyone has a fair shot and it seemed that all the contractors were fine companies. I look for fast response, quality work and honest prices. I run a large company and understand ROI. I think you have to use the service for some time to see if it pays. One month is way too short, but I understand the contractor world is not easy and the economy makes it tougher. Best of luck to everyone, I am looking for HVAC work.. darn AC unit went out!
Our recent experience with SM and the local contractor we selected, Kruegler Contracting & Remodeling, was positive and resulted in a major improvement to the exterior of our home. The project included the addition of a porch and expansion of our dormers. The two carpenters, Mike and Bob, were hard workers, conscientious and very skilled. They were attentive to keeping the work area clean and responsive to our requests. Our only recommendation to prospective customers is be informed on the quality of materials purchased by the contractor and also to be wary of the rush to completion. Overall, we are very satisfied with our remodeling project.
I’ve been with service magic for almost 4 years and as annoying as it can be dollar for dollar uits the best way to reach customers. I’m talking about print adds or the yellow pages. as far as bougas leads goes , I figured out why there are so many bad leads . What happens is a contractor will turn off his leads, then he posts bougas jobs at the beggining of the lead week. and sonner or later we all reach out lead limit around monday . so now everyone is at their quota and thwen the contractor turns his leads back on and all the leads are now legit ahnd he gets real leads and we get his imaginary leads . you just have to watch the trend of the leads and then report it to sm and they will weed out the abusers. i do agree that they dont substantiate leads its all computer. so are looky lews but really pisses me off is that now they are raising thier rates its as if 120.00 a lead is not enough for them . they should state loudly that the contracror is charged for the lead and not to use their service just to shop it borderline fraud but its better than nothing. just think of it as advertising and not lead buying and at the end of the year you will find that its about the same as print adds cost and i get 1out of 4 jobs i actually submitt an estimate on good luck they are just a wedge between the contractor and the consumer. i should have thought of it first then i’d be rich but i would not raise the rates they might lose a good client. I agree wholeheartedly with Jill K’s post that you have to be a proactive consumer and double check your prospective contractors. I have used SM three times and have not had any negative experiences, however, once they give me a list I then check the business out with the Better Business Bureau. That coupled with their initial recommendations has been gold for me (I keep calling one contractor for work the company doesn’t even do because I loved their work for us).
To the contractors, I am sorry to learn how bad the process can be for some of you. I can say that as a consumer the one time I did not hire the recommendations SM gave me was because I realized that landscaping was too pricey for me at the time so I abandoned the project. Unfortunately, now I realize how my getting quotes costs others:-(
Hi Melanie –

I agree with Ozzie. We have a family owned pool company (install, service, repair). We treat these referrals as if one of our existing customers referred us to their friend or family member -We cut prices for first time customers, include extras or little benefits to make sure the customer is more than pleased with our work. Afterall, cutting a few $ on initial service or repais is well worth it for a new long-term customer and additional referrals from them… We’ve only been signed up for a few weeks and out of 4 referrals we won 2, lost one (never called back after meeting), and a 4th requested services that go against industry standards and that our insurance won’t cover.
I’ve been trying to get reimbursed for the 4th referral since I should not be charged for a request that basically asks for illegal activities. The online credit system is horrible, there are only maybe 6 categories for your credit request to fit into (non of which fit this situation), and no “other” category. I selected the closest one i could imagine fitting, and it gave me an instant reponse that my credit was denied because I wasn’t charged enough for the lead – this makes no sense since I was charged the pubished amount for the service request. After 3 days of trying to get a hold of customer service, 2 emails and 2 phone calls later, I have no resolution… I do not plan on letting this go and will continue to follow-up. But if this ever happens again, we will discontinue using this service.
If you had a bad experience with a contractor you found in the phone book would you call “yellowpages” to complain?
ServiceMagic has ALOT of clients/contractors some of us just pull the lucky straw and get the bad luck sometimes.
Im a heating and cooling company that has had the greatest outcome with ServiceMagic, just be careful homeowners screen and ask questions of your contractors. Make sure to get several quotes from different companies. Just because your using a company that matches you up to a business doesnt mean they are full proof….You are who you are if you own a biz or not odds are if you get a rip off contractor that is who he is behind closed doors and that is not ServiceMagics fault
Ok, I read this blog just to see what people had to say about Service Magic because I stumbled upon them recently and I actually had a contractor come out to our home to get an estimate for installing new countertops.
A rep from SM called to “welcome” me after I entered my info online. He was really over-the-top annoying and “sweet” which was totally weird. But then I got an email from him with a few local contractors and I called one of them.
He came out to our home the next day. He owns his own business and it’s a family thing– he and his wife run it (she came out with him and offered really helpful suggestions) and his sons do all the work. They’ve been in business for over 20 years in the area. They brought references, photo books of previous jobs they’ve done, and let me keep a bunch of samples so I could think about it.
I’ve had three other estimates since them, but the guy I found via SM has the lowest estimate so I’ll go with them. For me, Service Magic has really been helpful, but I do see how contractors could get screwed. I wasn’t aware of how it really worked until I started reading this. I guess I lucked out, but I think it all comes down to being careful about who you do business with, and always checking other sources and doing your own research so you know what you’re getting. I’ll hire this company for my counters, but I’ll continue to be careful in the future,
Hello,
my name is Ozzie and I run a company that services my area with computer phone and other IT services and I signed up with service magic thinking it would be another scam but from the first day i got leads wich had sent to my cell phone I make close to $600.00 basically for all the contractor who are crying about it being a scam they need to check and see what they are doing wrong and the min leads are $100.00 per week not per month I record all my calls and I know what they told me from the start. out of 5 leads I got the first day bagged three lost one and they canceled one for me for being a mismatch so what i suggest for contractors using it have a direct phone number for yor account rep and stay in contact also dont be a jerk to the customers you call. and price them fairly if not lower for the first time because after all this is a lead program to grow your customer based not to make you money from the get go. I did a job the other day for $50.00 when i should have charged $175.00 just to gain the customer. other wise i would lose the customer and the lead. most important is be good to th customers and you will gain. as far as for the unhappy customers it is not service magics job to mak the right choice for you their job is to send your lead to contractors and you can make the choice whether to choose that contractor or not and we as contractors dont work for service magic nor do they have any power over our actions.(after all you dont go to a dating website and complain if they hooked you up with a date and it was bad)
Ozzie

I just called Service Magic about getting bids for new sod in my yard. Almost immediately I received an email that included malware called ad.doubleclick. My ESET antivirus kept trying to block it, but it keep trying to re-download onto my computer.
I called Service Magic back to complain and they claimed to not know anything about it. YEAH – RIGHT!!!
Stay away for Service Magic unless you have no problem with your computer having spyware and malware.
Hello. Another VERY dissatisfied customer. Service Magic is a SCAM!! It took me one week to realize what was going on. If I can save one contractor the trouble, my time on here is worth it. I believe this is a fraud issue. They send bogus leads, to several companies, change any online info you have entered yourself, they put a different number, that is linked to their company. They follow every call you get. They ruin your good name. They steal your money. Think about it….They screen every call you get, that originates from the online search, and ‘share’ and ‘charge’ several contractors for one bogus lead. DO NOT fall for their scam.
I just received a call from Service Magic wondering why I tried their referral service over a year ago and canceled after one month. During that month I may have received approximately 6-8 calls. They were text to my cell phone. I am a small electrical contractor, one man shop so I responded immediately. Out of the 6-8 leads I talked to one customer who had loss power,,,I could tell by our conversation she did not have a problem. If you have an electrical problem,,especially loss of power wouldn’t you want to get an electrician asap. The other texts I received I never talked to a person…I called immediately,,e-mailed, Of coarse I was expected to pay for these so called leads. In my opinion this is nothing but a scam. Read other reviews on line, you will see similar complaints by contractors. Their may be some legitimate leads, but my experience I never got one single job in the month I was taken by SM.
Hello Laura –
I am sorry to hear about your frustrating experience with the leads. We have multiple methods of lead notifications to make sure you are getting the information in the most efficient way for your company. We can always look into your preferences to make sure that we have you set up properly. As far as your concerns around the screening process and what it includes, ServiceMagic not only screens our professionals for state level licensing and general liability insurance but we also perform a background check on the owner of the company. This background check includes searches for criminal convictions, sex offender registry, civil judgments and others. We then collect direct feedback from homeowners through ratings and reviews. If you have any other questions or concerns you would like to discuss, please feel free to contact me directly at 303.963.8066 or mblack [@] servicemagic.com.
Thank you,
Mandy Black
This company makes nice cash by pitting out ALL contractors within your category. For example, today I received a lead via their automated system and was connected to the company that requested service ON THE SPOT. The customer informed me that he already had chosen a contractor and servicemagic just bills out the rest of us in the category. You are considered to have lost the lead, you bought it. It’s all the freakin HASSLE that you have to take on with Servicemagic that you have to weigh….IS IT WORTH IT? Oh, and by customers thinking the company soooo approves the contractors. NOT. I mean, almost every contractor carries insurance and license. That’s all they check. Consumers…it’s just ad space. Service professionals…it’s just advertising with extra hassle.
Hello Abdul-Latif –
I appreciate you taking the time to provide your feedback and would like to let you know that we have removed you from our call list. You should not receive any further calls, and if you do please contact me directly. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me directly at 303.963.8066 or you may e-mail me at mblack [at] servicemagic.com.
Thank you,

Service magic is an annoying and pushy company. I told them many months ago that I was looking just to buy cleaning contracts, and I made a mistake calling them, but they keep calling me even when I told them I wasn’t interested in their services. I don’t like being pushed especially being that I am just a small company and don’t want to spend my money on unguaranteed service. I prefer just to hustle on street for my accounts, and these people just don’t understand NO!!!!
But for some reason, ServiceMagic thought I did! They recommended a company that had absolutely HORRIBLE customer service/interaction!!! I had to explain the issue about 10 times to 3 people before they actually estimated and worked on the correct area, and still, my initial problems are not fixed (they now want $2500 more because the first $750 was them “trying to save me money.” Yeah, thanks.) SO many excuses- first they were “understaffed.” Then their “computer crashed.” WEEKS went by without any communication. Stephanie screened my calls, and her only response to my emails was “I’ll send someone out to check the work, but we still need your payment.” Really?
So I called ServiceMagic to get their help (since their “premium membership” promises “benefits,” including $1,000 Limited Service Guarantee. Good luck getting that, though. I’m sure the word “limited” means “never.” They said they couldn’t help me because I hadn’t paid for the job yet. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to not want to pay until the job is done! They sounded surprised since the company had such good reviews (so was I, honestly.) So they called the company (South Hills Builders) on my behalf, and, of course they lied and said they had been trying to contact me. It was my word against theirs, and ServiceMagic very clearly sided with them.
Here’s the kicker- now I see WHY they have such good reviews! I have tried several times to post my review, and ServiceMagic keeps rejecting it because it doesn’t meet their “guidelines.” I was nothing but honest and did not break any of their rules as far as I can tell. I think they just don’t want bad reviews! So what’s the point of ServiceMagic? Not to help the consumer, that’s for sure! They get money from contractors for “leads.” And that’s it. PLEASE do not be fooled into thinking this company wants to help you.
Service magic called me for over a year before i finally signed up.Andnow they have ripped me off and wont let me into my account.First of all i got alot of leads and most of the people never answered there phone and i suspect they are fake leads. They also raised my spend target from $100 a month to $300.When i called to ask about it the chcik on the phone said they record all calls and that she was reading where i agreed to $300 a month but wont send me a copy of the conversation and her superoir never called me like i asked them to.And not only did i say only to Take $100 a month they were taking $100 every week or so.So all winter in alaska i was spending money for leads that were most likely fake.Alaska might be a huge state but at a poplutaion of under 700,000 people word gets around faST.All my customers are repeat customers and all were very happy with my work to where i got tips from customers the biggest being $1500 and the lowest tip was $150.IM going to contact an attorney i want the money they stole from my account back.Beware of service magic,id rather deal with hokey peole on craigslist than scum bag con artists at service magic.
Servicemagic is one of the most dishonet and dangerous companies operating under a legitimate store front. Not only do the rip off contractors the put consumers at risk as well. I made the mistake of contacting service magic for a bathroom remodel job. There contractors are suppose to be scored on some 10 point system, all BS. The contractor SM sent to me turned out to be a total scam artist. I only lost $1000, before I realized what I had gotten into. The contractor it turns out, was not insured of licensed in my state. He and several of his team I found out later all had criminal records. The owner in currently under indictment by the IRS for submitting false w2 forms and collecting over $250,000 from the feds. As a matter of principal I am still pursuing legal action against the contractor almost 2 years later. Servicemagic is next, I plan on filing a civil law suit against them for my loses and also putting my family at risk by having convicted felons enter my home. Its only a matter of time when one of thier so called screened contractors is invovled with a serious crime with an unsuspecting home owner that goes beyond the scams. This company promotes crime. There time is coming.
We have been using Service Magic for approximatly 2 years. Each time a lead is sent to us, via email, we are charged $12. Of about 100 leads that have come through service magic we have gotten 5 jobs. Pest Control jobs generally run about $75/each. So so a $1200 expense – $375 gross profit = a LOSS of $825. It wasn’t because we were not good enough compared to our competitors, it was because the numbers provided were not valid or the address is not legit or the person was just “looking for prices” and wasn’t really ready for a service.
To top it off, today we recieved a lead from another pest control company, I called them and they have no record of using service magic!!!!! I called service magic and they said it might be another company “trying out” service magic to see how it works! I am now on hold with service magic, trying to cancel my account. I have been on hold for 27 minutes!!!!! !!!!!BEWARE!!!!!!!
I have had several aweful occasions trying service magic out. I spent a lot of time trying to make it work and enough money.
Overall bad business model. They are charging me to let other people contact me for prices/ or they are charging me to try and hurry up to contact someone right away before someone else does with a better price or some insentive to get the person’s business.
They are legit, if the person calls for the actual job to be done, I guess. I wouldn’t know from personal experience.
I agree that service magic appears to be some form of a scam. I’ve tried them on two different occasions. The first time the contractor I selected seemed to be very good, until the job was over, then when there was warranty work his numbers were disconnected and he failed to reply to email. I felt that possibly with the economy, as a landscaping company, they may have fallen on hard times. However, I had a similar experience the second time I used ta contractor through service magic, this time for exterminators. When I tried to post my review on their website, questioning the legitimacy of service magic, I received an email indicating my review did not comply with their guidelines. Effectively, you cannot post a negative comment about your service magic experience on their websites. I know I will no longer use them and will take every opportunity to share my experience with others. Caveat Emptor ……
I recently requested finding a furnace repair company. I was given the name of Evergreen Heating. I was taken in by this company for a total of $159.00. The furnace would not light. It was severely cold and I am disabled and need heat. The serviceman looked at the furnace and informedme that there was nothing wrong with it. They charged me $159.00 to tell me to just play with the thermostat. I found another repairman, within 2 minutes he fouind a piece of the furnace was broken, maliciously. No one in my family had touched it so that would leave………….? Luckily this man just charged me for the part being I am on a limited income. I was subjected to this cold for a long time. My pipes froze, my drains froze so of course no water. Please boycott this company and their main office RSM Heating.
SM is a great tool, extra $ for contractors, leads are great !!!
its better to get in touch with direct contractors & builders in your local area.
Servicemagic sucks! It is a total rip off!
I personaly love service magic, I have used them on plenty occations. It beats the heck out of using criags list! I only had one problem with them, but their customer service department took care of it.
